THE COSMIC SESSIONS (ARTxSPACE) ABSTRACT PROPOSAL
Abstract PROPOSAL THE COSMIC SESSIONS (ARTXSPACE)
Cosmic Sessions is an interdisciplinary artistic project exploring the intersection of music, space, art, and science through a live musical performance accompanied by immersive visuals inspired by scientific concepts and particle data.
The project will produce and publish a live-performance audiovisual piece featuring original music and visual storytelling that translates scientific ideas and particle data into an artistic experience. MoonDAO will partially sponsor the production, with its logo displayed at the end of one of the published videos of this musical series.
The project will also deliver one educational guide documenting the creative process and three presentations at elementary and high schools, reaching more than 100 students. Through the performance and educational activities, students will discover how music, visual art, scientific concepts, and data can intersect to communicate ideas about the universe and humanity's future in space.
Problem
Scientific concepts and particle data can be difficult to understand without the context, interpretation, or visual language needed to make them accessible to broader audiences. Although scientific information is available through research institutions and open datasets, translating it into engaging artistic experiences requires creative methods that connect abstract concepts with human experience.
MoonDAO has supported space-related educational initiatives, including Mission Cosmic Colombia and other public-engagement projects. Cosmic Sessions complements these efforts by creating a live musical performance that integrates original music, scientific concepts, and particle-data-inspired visuals, then using the finished artwork as the foundation for educational outreach.
The project addresses the opportunity to make scientific ideas more accessible through an original artistic experience and a documented educational process that can be reused in future outreach activities.
Solution
Cosmic Sessions will deliver three core outputs during the funded quarter.
- Original live-performance audiovisual artwork
Produce and publish one live musical performance featuring original music and synchronized visuals inspired by scientific concepts and particle data.
The visual component will translate selected scientific ideas and data into an artistic audiovisual language, creating a connection between sound, movement, visual patterns, and the physical processes that shape our understanding of the universe.
The finished performance will be published on YouTube. MoonDAO's logo will appear at the end of the video, with an acknowledgment of its contribution in the video description.
The production will distinguish scientific information from artistic interpretation and document the sources and methods used for the scientific and data-inspired visuals.
- Educational guide
Create one educational guide documenting how scientific concepts and particle data informed the musical performance and visual development.
The guide will include:
- An explanation of the scientific concepts explored in the artwork.
- References to the scientific literature, institutions, or datasets used.
- Examples of how scientific information was translated into music and visuals.
- Discussion prompts connecting scientific discovery, interdisciplinary creativity, and space exploration.
- Suggestions for adapting the creative process to educational activities.
The guide will be released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0), excluding third-party materials subject to separate licensing terms.
- Three school presentations
Deliver three presentations at elementary or high schools, reaching at least 100 students in total.
- Talk 1 — From Scientific Concepts to Art: How scientific ideas and particle data can inspire music and visual expression.
- Talk 2 — The Science Behind the Performance: How original music, visual storytelling, and data-inspired imagery come together in a live audiovisual production.
- Talk 3 — Creativity and the Future of Space Exploration: How art, scientific curiosity, and interdisciplinary skills can contribute to humanity's future beyond Earth.
Participation will be documented through school confirmations and attendance counts, with educator feedback collected where available.
Novelty & Prior Art
What already exists?
Scientific visualization, data sonification, live audiovisual performances, and science communication through art are established practices.
Relevant foundations include:
- CERN: https://home.cern/ — scientific research and public resources related to particle physics.
- CERN Open Data: https://opendata.cern.ch/ — publicly accessible particle-physics datasets and associated documentation.
- NASA Science: https://science.nasa.gov/ — scientific concepts and resources related to space, astronomy, and planetary science.
- NASA Open Science: https://science.nasa.gov/open-science/ — open-science resources and practices.
- MoonDAO Projects: https://www.moondao.com/projects-overview — examples of previous MoonDAO initiatives involving space education and public engagement.
These resources establish that scientific data, visualization, and educational outreach already exist. Cosmic Sessions does not claim to invent these fields.
What is new about this project?
The project will produce a specific original live-performance audiovisual artwork combining original music, scientific concepts, and particle-data-inspired visuals, accompanied by a documented educational guide and three school presentations reaching more than 100 students.
Its contribution is the integration of these elements into a completed artistic and educational package that MoonDAO can share with its community and use as an example of interdisciplinary science communication.
Why not just use the existing work?
Existing scientific datasets and visualization resources do not provide this particular original performance, its accompanying music, or the educational guide documenting the creative process. The grant will support the production of these specific deliverables and their use in direct educational outreach.
Honesty check
Cosmic Sessions builds on established practices in scientific visualization, data sonification, live performance, and science education. Its contribution is an original artistic interpretation and a documented educational experience, not a new scientific discovery or a claim that scientific data has never previously been used in art.
Lunar Bridge
A sustained human presence on the Moon will require people who can understand scientific concepts, communicate complex information, and contribute across technical and creative disciplines. Cosmic Sessions will translate scientific ideas and particle data into an accessible audiovisual performance, accompanied by an educational guide connecting scientific discovery to the broader context of space exploration. Three school presentations will introduce more than 100 students to scientific visualization, data-inspired creativity, and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the universe. The guide and performance will remain available for future educational use by MoonDAO and other interested communities. The project supports the educational and public-engagement foundations of lunar settlement but does not claim to directly develop lunar infrastructure or engineering capability.
