MDP-226: Chat We Are Going to the Moon: Part 1 - Sponsorships

Author: Will Brennan Date: January 15, 2026

Abstract

Type 2 Labs is building a lunar rover that Youtubers, streamers, and Chat (stream viewers) can control.

The Mission: Chat, We are Going to the Moon

We are in the process of prototyping the rover, finding mission sponsors, planning live rover pits at conferences, and planning analogue streaming missions.

Our marketing strategy: If it doesn't make people laugh or inspire them, we don't do it. Audiences are tired of polished corporate messaging — they want something that feels human and self-aware. Everything we do has a hint of irony, and that's by design. Serious Engineering. Unserious Marketing.

Our sponsorship model: We're building a roster of category-exclusive sponsors where each company owns their category as the "Official [Category] of Chat, We are Going to the Moon." The semi-ironic "Official" title is audience-tested and memorable — viewers find it entertaining, which means more engagement for sponsors. MoonDAO's role: MoonDAO would become the Official DAO of Chat, We are Going to the Moon — locking in the DAO category for one year. This is discounted for MoonDAO given the mission alignment and early timing.

$500 will help our business development and conference planning efforts while building infrastructure that benefits the wider MoonDAO network.

Problem

Problem 1:

Humanity needs a permanent base on the moon. Lunar settlement is largely dependent on government funding, which can drastically change depending on who is in power.

Problem 2:

Brands need attention to make money. Content creators need novelty to get attention. People want to be entertained.

Solution

A thriving commercial market for the moon would reduce dependence on government funding and increase the likelihood of a permanent settlement.

Streamers and brands get what they want: novelty and attention. The moon gets a new funding source.

Our mission is proving a concept: is there a pure entertainment market for the moon? Will streamers and viewers want to control rovers on the moon for fun?

Our plan is to:

  1. Find sponsors for our mission.
  2. Generate viewer support at conferences and on social media.
  3. Build a rover.
  4. Book a mission to the moon.

In the next three months we plan to build that list of sponsors and create a plan to have an interactive rover pit at DreamHack and Reindustrialize.

Benefits

Mission alignment: This project embodies MoonDAO's goal of democratizing space access. Chat-controlled hardware is participation, not just observation.

What you get with a sponsorship

  • Category sponsor status: MoonDAO becomes "The Official DAO of Chat, We are Going to the Moon"
  • Live stream shoutouts: Fun, memeable callouts during streams — e.g. "Check out MoonDAO for your everyday moon needs"
  • Co-branded merchandise: Type 2 Labs x MoonDAO merchandise available on MoonDAO marketplace (and potentially Type 2 Labs store)
  • Sponsor of the Day: MoonDAO featured as spotlight sponsor during rotating live streams and social posts
  • Immediate exposure: MoonDAO mentioned as sponsor during meetups and sponsor outreach
  • Citizenship promotion: MoonDAO citizenship promoted at any events we attend
  • Conference demos: Rover demos at conferences (e.g. DreamHack and Reindustrialize) featuring MoonDAO as sponsor

Where this could go (aspirational, not part of this proposal):

  • Deeper MoonDAO integration for rover control
  • Launchpad initiative or exclusive MoonDAO mission

Risks

Risk 1: Sponsors don't sign

  • Mitigation: Diverse outreach across industries (gaming, food, lifestyle, crypto). Compelling pitch materials. Leverage streamer relationships to demonstrate audience value.

Risk 2: We never raise enough for the moon mission

  • Mitigation: Start with sponsors. Conferences get more streamers on board and build viewer interest, which attracts more sponsors and potential investment.

Objectives

Objective #1: Prepare for DreamHack Atlanta (May 2026) and Reindustrialize Detroit (June 2026)
