MDP-214: Sustain MoonDAO Growth with Laika

Author: Kara Howard Date: January 21st, 2026

# **Abstract**

The purpose of this project is to support MoonDAO and its community in creating more meaningful and productive connections and collaborations via a custom-built member matching bot initiated in Discord.

Problem

MoonDAO and its citizens want to increase member engagement within Discord and the DAO at large. At this time, it can be challenging to identify who is in the DAO, what their roles are, and to make connections for projects within the DAO and in the space industry as a whole.

Solution

The Laika bot is designed to facilitate targeted match-making between members in Discord with these core features: 5-step multilingual onboarding flow (EN/ES/PT/FR)

  • Intelligent matching algorithm (weighted compatibility scoring)
  • Cross-platform identity
  • Real-time match notifications
  • Analytics and metrics tracking

Laika asks the following qualifiers to then make the best targeted matches: 1. Language Selection (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French) 2. Professional roles 3. Organization and titles 4. Interests 5. Connection goals 6. Events attending 7. Social media links 8. Discord handle

### **Bot Architecture**

Laika will be built on:

  1. Framework: ElizaOS (multi-agent framework)
  2. Runtime: Node.js 22, TypeScript 5.6.3
  3. Database: MongoDB 6.3.0 (primary), PostgreSQL 8.13.0 (supported)
  4. AI/ML: OpenAI GPT-4o-mini, OpenAI Embeddings
  5. Infrastructure: Docker, Fluence (decentralized cloud)
  6. Integrations: Discord Bot API

**Prerequisites:**
  1. VPS, 8GM RAM, 50GB Storage
  2. MongoDB Provider
  3. OpenAI API
  4. Discord Bot API token

##### **Project Roadmap:**

Month 1: Discord integration and testing

This phase focuses on integrating the bot with a test group in Discord and tailoring the onboarding experience for early users. We will develop and refine the matching algorithm to ensure meaningful connections. The month concludes with a controlled test group launch to validate core functionality and user flow.

Week 1: Discord integration Week 2: Onboarding adaptation Week 3: Matching algorithm Week 4: Test group launch

Month 2: Soft launch and analytics testing

We address feedback from early testing by fixing bugs and preparing the community for wider access. A soft launch introduces the platform to a broader audience in a controlled manner. Analytics tools are integrated and tested to track performance, engagement, and user behavior.

Week 1: Bug fixes Week 2: Community prep Week 3: Soft launch Week 4: Analytics testing

Month 3: Laika introduction

This phase enhances features and optimizes performance for scalability and stability. Laika is officially introduced to the community, supported by onboarding and engagement efforts. The month ends with a final handoff, ensuring the platform is production-ready and fully operational.

Week 1: Feature enhancements Week 2: Performance optimization Week 3: Community introduction Week 4: Final handoff

Benefits

The benefits of this engagement bot include:

  • More recurring connectivity between MoonDAO members, with matches increasing as more members onboard
  • More MoonDAO members collaborating on projects within MoonDAO and in the space industry at large, due to the ease of being able to find aligned project members
  • Discord members are able to connect with others that are attending the same conferences - a value-add for joining into the Discord and/or becoming a citizen
  • MoonDAO's Discord becomes known as a space that the space industry can make connections with one another, and new citizens join as a result of referrals

Future opportunities include continuing to build out the bot to have space industry knowledge-sharing capabilities, mission integrations, and more.

Risks

As is the case in sharing technology with a decentralized community, it is unclear who specifically holds the responsibility of managing this technology. Within the three months, our team will be managing and provide clear documentation. After this three month project, Ayoola (a MoonDAO Discord member) is available for continued support with retroactive awards.

Our technical team shared they will do this to mitigate hallucinations from the bot:

Local-first processing (regex patterns)

  • Constrained AI responses (strict system prompts)
  • We will use low temperature and allow bot to refuse answer when the question is out of context.
  • Structured onboarding flow (scripted messages), the onboarding will be strict and bot will answer like “This information is not valid”.
  • Adding rules to AI prompt like following:
    • Answer ONLY using the provided context.
    • If information is missing, say: "I don’t have enough information."
    • Do NOT guess or fabricate facts.
    • Do NOT assume.
  • Add a validation for answer to cross-check hallucination
  • If the user asks for financial/legal advice, respond with a disclaimer and suggest consulting a professional.
  • AI bot Flow:
    • User → Intent Check → Retriever (Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)) → LLM (strict prompt, low temp) → Verification Step → Final Answer
  • Error handling and fallbacks
  • Ongoing monitoring

Objectives

Within these three months, our bot aims to increase member engagement with the following metrics:

  • Project Collaborations: Increase the number of MoonDAO projects and initiatives that form through Laika-facilitated connections
  • New Member Growth: Increase new citizen growth through active member engagement and referrals about the bot and its benefits
  • Event Engagement: Connect MoonDAO members attending the same space industry events and conferences to enhance in-person networking
  • Cross-Platform Networking: Enable MoonDAO members to discover and connect with others based on complementary roles, interests, and goals within the space industry
  • Community Knowledge Sharing: Create pathways for members to share expertise and find collaborators for space-related projects and initiatives
