MDP-213: World's Biggest Analog - Retroactive Outreach

Author: Shriya Musuku Date: 1/14/26 Edited 1/21/26: Incorporates Senate Feedback

Abstract

Outreach to expand the impact of the World's Biggest Analog (WBA)Project to K-12 education. This is a post event idea to work on grass roots level talks about the importance of soft skills and to inspire students to participate in space & space related topics!

Problem

Due to the timeline and analog astronautics duties of WBA, I believe that the outreach efforts were not sufficient (were not the AA's main focus). I have had a goal to expand upon this and have just received the content that I recorded from my teammate.

History / Impact so far: We completed 10 experiments that were a part of WBA and MDRS's agenda, primarily focused on hydroponics and crew well being. Outside of this, I have completed an outreach segment through the Analog Crew Education (ACE) project. Through this, I sent status updates and educational materials to 3 high school teachers across the US (total of about 60 students). I was also able to record content for outreach in my locale for more K-12 education.

Solution

Vision for the next steps: I have just received recordings of the content from the mission. I hope to still reach out to my local school district and meet with one or more of the classes to get them excited and to educate them on the impact of analogs, protocols in "Isolated, Confined, and Extreme" environments, as well as how this can be applied to wellness in their own lives (mindfulness, teamwork, etc). The anticipated minimum budget is $0, outside of my own time and effort.

This is currently a 'single owner project', where I envision discussing the experience I had at the Mars Desert Research Station on behalf of my team. There is scope for collaboration with other educators or interested groups for me to join remotely and present to students (covered under Objective #2)

The nice to haves:

  1. MoonDao Stickers to distribute to the students. I plan on budgeting for this based on the individual school response. I view this as a token of gratitude for sponsorship and a way to bring a smile to the kids.
  2. I can expand the project to 4 other school districts which are within 45 minutes of me in various directions depending on the response
  3. I have a potential lead on expanding this virtually (+ mailing out stickers as a token) to a STEM mentorship program for girls in Toronto, Canada. A friend of mine runs their events and has expressed in this project.
  4. Ideas welcome on how to make this more exciting or impactful. I'm hoping to utilize the time I have left before medical school to pass on the spirit of exploration

Deliverable: To acquire media documentation of myself speaking at the event, approximately how many students were reached, and to share the post of me speaking / presenting as a final outreach deliverable. Moondao will be tagged with the added detail of being the sponsors for the WBA Scholarship to show your support for this project from inception.

Benefits

1. Primary: K-12 Outreach and STEM Education 2. Secondary: Spreading the MoonDao name (as sponsors of my analog experience!) and more so if we can acquire stickers to distribute (will need assistance with this) 3. No monetary benefits expected; No significant costs expected either

Risks

None anticipated: I plan to be traveling in my local area and reaching out to contacts to work towards this project. The turnout may vary across school districts and classes, but the preliminary goal is to reach at least one school (most achievable being my past high school's individual classes or a school level talk, depending on the permissions)

Objectives

You can write as many OKRs as you think are needed. One focused goal is preferred instead of many. OKRs should use SMART principles (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound).

Objective #1:

  • Outreach to 1 Local High School (Ideally 60 students minimum)
  • Timeline: within Spring 2026 Semester (Jan - June)
  • Relevance: with the growing excitement about space exploration and the upcoming Artemis II mission among many other amazing achievements in the space community, there is a need for including and inspiring K-12 STEM students!

Member(s) responsible for OKR and their role:

  • Shriya Musuku

Objective #2:

  • Secondary remote outreach efforts to women in STEM
  • Efforts to reach out to other high schools within a 1 hour radius of my local area (4 total)
